Wes Anderson- Like Movies Not By Wes Anderson « Taste of Cinema. Pirate Radio aka The Boat that Rocked (2. Fans of Team Zissou are most likely to appreciate this dry comedy set on the high seas. Inspired by true events, this film follows a crew of disc jockeys illegally broadcasting rock music as the British government attempts to prohibit it in 1. When seventeen- year- old Carl can’t seem to clean up his act, his mother makes the curious decision to board him on a ship full of rock . As he gets to know his shipmates (including a smooth- talking American radio star played by Philip Seymour Hoffman), acquaints himself with their vast musical knowledge, and ultimately seeks their (foolish) council in losing his virginity, Carl begins to suspect that one of the crew members is actually his long lost father. In addition to the setting and reluctant camaraderie of the characters, another similarity to Anderson can be seen in the fact that even the antagonists in Pirate Radio the are more endearing than most. The pompous bureaucrat trying to shut down the radio ships is a pitiful joke of a man, and his assistant, Mr. Twatt (pronounced as it’s spelled), is clearly smarter and more sympathetic than his so- called superior. A similar vibe can be detected in Steve Zissou’s nemesis, Alistair Hennessy (the great Jeff Goldblum). He is prick, as is Steve, but not evil or beyond redemption. Such villains end up providing more comic relief than contemptibility. Much like in The Life Aquatic, the audience develops a strong feeling of attachment to the large cast of characters, and leaves wanting to know more about them. Somewhere (2. 01. Sofia Coppola co- produced this subtle film with her brother, long- time Wes Anderson collaborator, Roman Coppola. Somewhere stands out from the former Coppola’s other work by creating a somber mood in a beautiful environment. Like many key scenes in The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, Somewhere takes the picturesque atmosphere of decedent Los Angeles hotels and turns it glum with the characters it introduces. A finely tailored original score by French alt- rock group Phoenix compliments the downbeat mood. Based partially on Sofia Coppola’s own childhood as the daughter of legendary director Francis Ford Coppola, Somewhere examines the strained relationship between an aging actor (Stephen Dorff) and his eleven- year- old daughter (Elle Fanning). Much like in the case of Steve Zissou, Dorff’s character, Johnny, is going through an existential crisis, feeling empty and filling up his life with drugs and meaningless sex, until his estranged daughter shows up. While the tone of the film is considerably more sober than The Life Aquatic, it ends on a more optimistic note than the relationship between Steve and Ned Zissou. Greenberg (2. 01. Another long- time Wes collaborator, Noah Baumbach, applied his experience to this one. Ben Stiller plays Roger Greenberg, a socially awkward musician who comes to LA to housesit for his wealthy brother. There he meets his brother’s equally awkward assistant, Florence (Greta Gerwig), who gives him a much- needed boost of confidence and exhilaration. A little subtler than Baumbach’s other films like The Squid and the Whale or Frances Ha, Greenberg’s strength lies in its reliability, though differs somewhat from Anderson in its mood. The character- driven narrative feels at times like the two leads are little more than a pin drop away from an emotional meltdown. While many Anderson characters are similarly faced with mid- life (The Life Aquatic), quarter life (Bottle Rocket), coming- of- age (Rushmore, Moonrise Kingdom), or all of the above (The Royal Tenenbaums) crises, their stoic humor and wit usually outshine their cynicism. Wes Anderson has the uncanny ability to make seemingly unlikeable characters lovable. Baumbach, who co- wrote The Life Aquatic and Fantastic Mr. Fox with Anderson, delivers a very familiar touch with Greenberg, with only slightly less developed characters. Submarine (2. 01. This novel- turned- movie, at first glance, looks like Rushmore in the UK with a more confident kid. The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou Blu-ray (2004): Starring Bill Murray, Owen Wilson and Anjelica Huston. With a plan to exact revenge on a mythical shark that killed. Just because the drugs are fake in movies doesn't mean you can't still overdose on them. Natural horror (also known as creature features) is a subgenre of horror films that features nature running amok, typically in the form of animals or plants that kill. Fifteen- year- old Welsh schoolboy Oliver Tate is every bit as clever as Max Fischer (maybe even more so, since he decides to pursue girls his own age rather than adult women) and a bit more focused on helping other people, namely his quarreling parents, before himself. Though at first, the film may seem most thematically and stylistically similar to Rushmore, it ends up feeling different. Submarine, like many films with young protagonists, makes the adolescent boy seem more mature than most of his adult counterparts, whereas the genius of Rushmore lies in the way it takes an emotionally immature kid, pairs him up with an emotionally immature adult, and forces them both to grow up. Submarine ultimately feels more like The Fantastic Mr. Fox, in that its main characters, however flawed, always seem pretty sure of themselves and their goals. Frances Ha (2. 01. Noah Baumbach’s similarities to Anderson are probably most clear in his 2.
Greta Gerwig. The offbeat, introspective dramedy follows Frances Halladay (Gerwig) as she travels from New York to California to Paris and back, enjoying reunions with people she left behind while doubting her own prospects as a professional dancer. The film explores common themes in Wes Anderson and Sofia Coppola’s works, such as loneliness and uncertainty contrasted with beauty and wealth. While not so much preaching the clich. Gerwig, who gives a more spirited performance as the title character compared to her supporting role in Greenberg, brings an uncommon combination of wit and adorability to the table in Frances Ha. Stylistically, this film’s biggest difference from an Anderson piece is its choice to go black- and- white, reminiscent of Woody Allen’s Manhattan. Nonetheless, Anderson fans will see similarities in the cinematography throughout. Author Bio: Chris Dobrogosz is a freelance writer currently based in the greater New York City area. Even if we don’t like being creeped out right before we shut out the light and prepare to sleep, we keep going back back to the movies for more things to be afraid of. In truth, most of us love being scared. We can’t get enough of it. That’s why people turn up in droves to have the popcorn frightened right of their laps whenever a new (or reimagined) creepshow comes to town. With the release of. Sinister 2 beckoning audiences to enter the dark and have their minds invaded by the dreadful, the grim, the macabre, here is Screen Rant’s list of 1. Horror Movies That Will Give You Nightmares. The Babadook. Last year’s indie horror sensation earned its reputation as one of the most frightening films of modern times. A stressed widow named Amelia (Essie Davis) is raising a paranoid problem child (Noah Wiseman), who counters imaginary threats to his safety by creating dangerous, Rube Goldberg- esque contraptions that put others in danger. One night she reads to him from a ghoulish storybook and accidentally wakes up a mythic creature, precipitating her decline into insanity. The emotional trouble Amelia faces would be bracing and horrific enough without the presence of a smirking demon lurking in every shadow to rob her of sleep and peace of mind. Director Jennifer Kent makes sure that it isn’t just the presence of Mr. Babadook that sends viewers hiding behind their fingers; the look on her characters’ faces when they know he’s coming is enough to send shivers down your spine. The fire crew is called out to an apartment building, responding to a sick tenant (Martha Carbonell) who lately contracted a disease that has turned her into a ravenous zombie. Once the action starts it never relents. The Die Hard of horror films, . The Woman In Black pits Arthur Kipps (Daniel Radcliffe, fresh off his final outing as the world’s most famous boy wizard), a young widow, against a malevolent spirit occupying a decrepit mansion. The children of the town Crythin Gifford, England are being compelled to kill themselves and Radcliffe discovers it’s because of the ghost occupying the house on the edge of town. The film is bursting with spooky images, but when Kipps enters the house for the last time, determined to stop the woman in black, director James Watkins goes for broke. He throws every imaginable tactic at the screen, not satisfied until you’ve succumbed to the fright. The Woman In Black takes no prisoners, daring you to look away and knowing full well you’ll be back to see what you missed. It Follows. Breakout art horror hit It Follows wound up in multiplexes despite a too- respectable festival pedigree and purposely formalistic style for one reason: it’s absolutely bone- chilling. High school student Jay (Maika Monroe) has the worst date of her life when her would- be suitor (Jake Weary) sleeps with her, then drugs her and ties her up. But that’s only the start of her bad luck. He’s apparently passed “It” to her, and that “It” is a very bad thing indeed. That is, unless she can sleep with someone else and pass it on to the next unlucky sap. Director David Robert Mitchell scores his biggest jump- out- of- your- seat moments by simply setting his camera up a few dozen yards away from “It,” which can take the form of any person, whether friend or stranger, and watching them steadily march toward Jay. It’s a remarkably effective strategy and it turns every shot in the movie into a jack- in- the- box. Without warning someone could burst out of the background of any shot and walk towards the camera, Jay, and we poor saps in the audience. It’ll have you looking over your shoulder on the street and in your dreams for weeks. The Evil Dead. I know what you’re thinking. The charming 1. 98. Pick either and walk away with interrupted sleep. The films both concern a group of unknowing tourists who unthinkingly read from the Necronomicon, the Book of the Dead. The original film prizes tactile grotesquerie, pitting a then- unknown Bruce Campbell against a host of grizzly demons, all created with low- budget, stop- motion effects, which are after his easily mortified flesh. Director Sam Raimi, years before his taking on the Spiderman films or Oz: The Great & Powerful, takes impish glee in making things pop out from every corner of the frame, pummeling his star with every conceivable torment over the course of one long night. The Necronomicon returns in Fede Alvarez’s remake/tribute, this time opened by kids staging an intervention for a heroin- addicted Mia (Jane Levy). Alvarez can’t match Raimi’s original for sheer, pulse- racing effect, so he goes for the gag reflex. The 2. 01. 3 Evil Dead is a parade of gooey spatter and improperly amputated limbs. It will send the faint of stomach into hysterics, if they even opened their eyes long enough to see. Whichever you choose, be sure to watch with the lights on. Silent Hill. Fans of the insanely popular survival horror video game series Silent Hill were crushed when it was announced that the latest installment of the game, starring Walking Dead heartthrob Norman Reedus, was pulled from development. If you don’t know why fans would be crestfallen to lose another chapter in the ongoing saga, give Christophe Gans’ 2. The Silent Hill movie is a properly uncanny experience. Operating on the logic of nightmares, Gans’ Silent Hill is about Rose Da Silva (Radha Mitchell) and her adopted daughter Sharon (Jodelle Ferland). Sharon keeps wandering off in her sleep and shouting about a place called “Silent Hill,” so Rose takes Sharon to the town of Silent Hill, the source of her nightmares. The two are separated almost immediately, but Rose’s troubles only really begin when the air raid sirens go off and a hellish red night falls on the sleepy town, sending every manner of psychosexual apparition after the frantic mother. The flamboyantly disturbing creatures occupying this alternate dimension may have you drinking coffee to ward off a fitful night’s rest. Poltergeist. When Gil Kenan’s reboot of Poltergeist hit theaters earlier this year, the question most frequently posed in reviews was: why do we need a new Poltergeist when we already have a perfectly good one? The 1. 98. 2 film is suburban horror at its finest. Combining the doe- eyed wonder of producer Steven Spielberg with the surgically precise brutality of director Tobe Hooper, the original film puts the concept of a nuclear family through the ringer. Every Fan undoubtedly has their own favorite creepy image, from the paranormal investigator with a sudden skin condition, to the unwanted guests in the pool, but the film will probably go down in history for the presence of the world’s least friendly clown doll. Every potentially scary thing about childhood comes to vivid life in Poltergeist, which is why it will never lose its power to give even the most stoic viewer a night of bad dreams. Mama. Guillermo Del Toro’s success as the director of singular blockbusters like Pacific Rim, Hellboy and Blade 2 has allowed him to become one of the most distinct producers in the world. In between the massive productions of his own projects, he’s overseen a handful of ghost stories that unmistakably bear his imprint. The most effective of these films was newcomer Andr. When social services discover the children and place them with their closest relatives (Game of Thrones’ Nikolaj Coster- Waldau and Jessica Chastain), “Mama,” the name the children have given to the spirit, comes to stay with them. The adults don’t notice it (or her) at first, but something as bloodcurdling as Mama doesn’t stay hidden for long. The most hair- raising creation in recent horror movies, Mama has only to show her face or produce a spindly, decomposing digit to ensure that people will thoroughly check under their beds before going to sleep. The Thing. There’s just no beating practical effects for an old- fashioned scare. Master director John Carpenter’s best film is comprised of an isolated, claustrophobic location, eleven of the greatest character actors in America led by Kurt Russell at his most magnetically unkempt, and a rogue’s gallery of monster effects created by special effects guru Rob Bottin. A remake of 1. 95. The Thing From Another World, Carpenter’s film follows a scientific team in Antarctica after an alien organism infiltrates their base and begins to take over people’s bodies, which it then distorts in horrific ways. The Thing, like its lovingly crafted alien being, is a nesting doll of unnerving developments. Just when you think you’ve seen it all, some new part of “the beast” opens up and out comes a new set of teeth or an impropable eye. Bottin and Carpenter seem to have reached into our unconscious brains and pulled out the most horrendous things they were capable of imagining, which is why the film’s staying power is unquestionable. Cloverfield. Producer J. J. Abrams, writer Drew Godard and director Matt Reeves (responsible for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Cabin In The Woods and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes between them) had more than a few tricks up their sleeve when they conceived Cloverfield. First there was the brilliant ad campaign, which teased only that something rather large would be attacking New York, told through the perspective of a young man (TJ Miller) with a video camera. Then there was the unveiling of the monster: a curvy, giant alien capable of toppling skyscrapers. And if that didn’t scare you, maybe the parasites it carried with it through space are more your speed. When our heroes run afoul of the beasts in the subway, it’s plenty terrible, but not a patch on what happens when they bite you. Cloverfield boasted a pretty impressive monster rampage, but it pales in comparison to the nauseating chemistry lesson the space bugs give our heroes. The human body and extraterrestrial bacteria don’t mix. That section of the movie might cost you a few nights’ sleep. The Town That Dreaded Sundown.

THE CARSNow, it’s important to highlight from the start that this a question that affects more vehicles than the Golf GTI and far more brands than solely Volkswagen. True, the German car maker first introduced the direct- shift gearbox (DSG) – or dual- clutch transmission (DCT) – into a series production road car in 2. Volkswagen Golf R3. But paddle- shifted automated manual- type transmissions had already been seen in high- end street cars since the late 1. Ferrari 3. 55 F1 and SMG- equipped E3. BMW M3. The proliferation of these transmissions, however, has been more impressive. According to Volkswagen Australia, since the arrival of the Mk. Golf in 2. 00. 9, DSG transmissions have become the dominant sales choice for local buyers and now claim a 9. With the majority of manufacturers reporting similar sales splits in favour of paddle- equipped models and away from those with traditional three pedal- setups, many marques have been forced to bow to the trend, even – or especially – when it comes to performance models. From Audi and BMW to Mercedes- Benz, Nissan and Renault, the option to select a traditional manual gearbox is becoming ever more scarce or, in some cases, entirely non- existent. Ferrari and Lamborghini now claim they won’t even make a manual transmission anymore, and last year the poster child for performance car purity, the iconic Porsche 9. GT3, was unveiled sans a third pedal for the first time ever in the hardcore model’s life. So with all this in mind, let’s meet our contenders. Our two test cars for the day will be a Carbon Steel Grey manual and a Tornado Red DSG. Attached to a list priced of $4. GTI teams a 1. 62k. W/3. 50. Nm turbocharged 2. Volkswagen’s extended electronic differential lock (XDL), rather than the electronically controlled limited- slip front differential found in the more powerful but dearer Golf GTI Performance. Contact. 2 tyres, the DSG Bridgestone Potenzas. Numbers all squared away, it’s time for the real challenge. THE TESTSTaking into consideration the Volkswagen Golf GTI’s excellent on- road flexibility and usability, focusing solely on performance (i. Based on this then, we have devised four tests that each car will complete. The first will be a five kilometre hills run through a tasty stretch of winding Victorian forest road. Car. Advice’s own preeminent paddle aficionado, Anthony Crawford, will be in charge of the DSG, and yours truly the manual. The passenger will be tasked with not only avoiding . Let the games begin. Tony’s first at the helm of the red DSG, while over in the passenger seat my trigger finger hovers above the official counter’s silver clicker. Now, given Volkswagen has, in the past, claimed DSG shift times of around eight milliseconds, keeping track of gear changes can be no mean feat. So to ensure a modicum of legitimacy, several runs are to be completed with the goal being to come up with an average gear change number per car. Vomit and incident free, Tony manhandles the paddles an average of 2. A quick swap of cars, and seats, and we tackle the identical leg again, this time with my ginger self charged with juggling the grey car’s trio of pedals. Another stack of runs down and the results are in: the manual averaging 1. DSG. Fun enough to have Tony questioning his original preconceived bias towards paddles, the manual easily feels the more engaging of the two and allows braking to be done later and gear changes to be completed at will. The paddles win out for sheer speed of shifts, of course, and also ensure hands never have to leave the wheel. The exhaust . And for the record, neither car is equipped with the auto park assist function included as part of the model’s $1. Fast quelling any possible inkling of nerves, Tony seamlessly parks first the red DSG, then the Grey manual, finding engagement of reverse gear in both cars quick and trouble free. Tony says that while the six- speed gearbox in the manual GTI isn’t quite as fluid as the six- speeder in the base Golf 9. TSI, it still slides into gear with almost no effort and throwing hill- start assist into the mix makes parallel parking on an incline a breeze. The parking prize, however, must go to the DSG Volkswagen Golf GTI. With the low- speed jitters and hesitation that plagued earlier versions of the dual- clutch transmission all but a distant memory, Tony concludes the red GTI is comfortably easier to park than its grey manual rival. Onto the three- point turn and the pressure is now on my own shoulders to test first hand how both transmissions deal with that moment you realise you’ve just driven past the street you were looking for. Jumping into the manual first and things are a simple and straightforward affair. Arrive in first gear, turn hard right towards the kerb, snick the notchy gear lever into reverse, roll the car back while unwinding lock, back into first and we’re away. Swapping into the DSG and my doubts about how the transmission will handle the sudden stop- start nature of the task are hard to mask, but all for not. Barring a minor pause between selecting reverse and the car permitting backwards drive – repeated going from reverse to drive – the challenge is completed almost as seamlessly as in the grey GTI. So still not a lot to chose between the two at this point then. Let’s see if a stint in bumper- to- bumper traffic changes the landscape any. But while the grey Volkswagen Golf GTI and I are getting all too familiar with the process of slowly clutching out, crawling forward several millimetres and quickly clutching in again, Tony is in full auto mode in the red GTI with his stress levels, and his car’s paddle shifters, oblivious to the situation’s aggravations. Sure, the manual allows you the option to rest the gear lever in neutral when stationary, but when it comes to the urban grind, it’s hard to go past the DSG for overall ease and simplicity. Tony concurs saying that in its latest and now smoother guise, the DSG transmission operates much more like a standard torque- converter automatic transmission, making the peak- hour crawl effortless and a far more relaxing experience than in the manual GTI. CONCLUSIONStick versus paddles or manual versus DSG is a difficult question, as we found out. A lot has to do with personal preference and individual factors such as the way you like to drive and what or where the majority of your driving may be. And, while we weren’t specifically looking at running costs in this particular back to back, it’s interesting to note that over the first three years of servicing, both Volkswagen Golf GTIs will set you back the same amount under the car maker’s capped- price scheme ($1. Over our combined 1. DSG – 1. 1. 2. L/1. L/1. 00km – despite both cars completing identical tests and being driven in an identical manner. Regardless of which side of the fence you sit, there’s no denying the Mk. Volkswagen Golf GTI is an impressive and capable steerer that proudly carries forward a legacy that started with the original GTI almost 4. Happy to argue about plenty – food and table tennis to name a couple of things – Tony and I can at least agree on that. Tony’s pick: Through the twisties, the manual transmission is simply a cut above the DSG for sheer driver engagement and entertainment. Having to shift gears yourself may not be to everyone’s taste, but it allows for far greater control of the car into and out of corners and makes swapping cogs possible at precisely the engine speeds you desire. That said, if commuting in city traffic is a daily affair, then I’d still have to go with the DSG and its paddles. It’s simply easier. Dave’s pick: An absolute blast through our forest roads and fractionally smoother in the three- point turn challenge, the grey Golf GTI confirmed my unashamed advocacy of manual transmissions throughout the day. But ignoring the impressive flexibility and versatility a DSG- type paddle- shifted transmission provides – particularly in heavy traffic or when the sole purpose of a trip is to transport you from point A to point B – is pure frivolity. And while I was thrilled to see Tony right on the cusp of jumping ship to the three- pedal society following his time through the bends, my money still goes to the manual every time. Being able to actually. American Horror Story season 7: Everything we know so far from theme and release date to its cast. American Horror Story fans are seemingly left in a constant state of speculation - though that's always been part of the fun. Last year, fans went wild with anticipation when it was revealed that the theme would be kept secret right until season 6's premiere; Roanoke turned out, as well, to defy traditional formats with a reality- show take interwoven with endless twists, turns, and gruesome deaths. That leaves the door wide open for season 7. We could go anywhere. Explore anything, through any means. Indeed, showrunner Ryan Murphy has hinted that we could be about to see a major shift in the show's usual anthology approach. American Horror Story fans are horrified by the announcement that Lena Dunham has joined the cast. Ryan Murphy made the surprising casting announcement in a tweet. Here is an alphabetical listing of all the movies (so far) that have been certified as among the 366 weirdest ever made, along with links to films reviewed in capsule. With American Horror Story: Hotel nearly a memory, it's time to start looking forward to the next assortment of evil creators and gory special effects. He previously told The Hollywood Reporterthat in Roanoke, . What's the theme? Despite Ryan Murphy's promises to reveal this year's theme back in spring, we're still entirely in the dark as to what to expect, leaving us in a not too dissimilar position to last year's Roanoke. That, supposedly, won't happen again, leaving us counting down the days until the show's first teaser; Murphy has hinted this year will similarly have a . Likely to be, as has since been unveiled, the fact that season 7 will be dealing in some way with the most recent US election. Many jumped on Murphy's quotes as confirmation it would be the series' over- arching theme, though he has since clarified that the show opens on election night, but that it will deal with the subject in a far more allegorical way. Furthermore, Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump will appear, but only on television as, . Now, there are several details that need to be slotted into that overall picture. First off, Murphy hinted that Freak Show characters would somehow make a reappearance, examining . So we're sort of still exploring season 4 in season 7. UPDATE: Ryan Murphy revealed on Instagram that Twisty the Clown will return. What's particularly interesting is that Murphy has so far shared two pieces of concept art for the series which seem to echo certain Freak Show elements. Though an elephant- monster seems an obvious nod to the Republican Party and its symbol, the lower half of the mask is strangely reminiscent of Twisty the Clown. Another piece of concept art shows a frightening visage with two hands reaching out - one looks a lot like those sported by Evan Peters' Lobster Boy in Freak Show, while the other has six fingers, traditionally associated with witchcraft. Could there also be a callback to Coven? Two other revealing glimpses shared by Murphy involve, strangely, hair dye. One shows that Evan Peters will this season be sporting a patriotic blue dye, while Billie Lourd will have a white- ish do; the latter arrived with the caption . Could there be a weather/apocalyptic side to this year's season? Leaked photos from the production have revealed both artificial snow and flooded sets being utilised, all taking place within a quiet piece of American suburbia. Who's new? As mentioned, both Evan Peters and Billie Lourd have been confirmed for the show; that's alongside regular Sarah Paulson, Leslie Grossman, Billy Eichner, and Colton Haynes. Add to that, both Adina Porter and Cheyenne Jackson have been spotted on set. UPDATE: Scott Pilgrim vs. That leaves quite a few regulars without confirmed appearances; a fact bound to agitate dedicated fans of the show, who may have grown somewhat attached to their TV family. It's already been confirmed that Lady Gaga, who just wrapped A Star is Born and is about to head on tour, will not be returning this season. Angela Bassett has hinted she might be able to ? Denis O'Hare? Wes Bentley? Frances Conroy? Taissa Farmiga? No word yet. Finn Wittrock was recently cast on American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace, but there's no word on his American Horror Story involvement. When's the release date? There's no confirmed release date yet, though the show is expected to premiere this September. What We Know So Far. UPDATE: It looks like American Horror Story is taking the reality show/docu- series route with Season 6, as the first episode was partly an episode of the faux show My Roanoke Nightmare, which ties into set photos leaked a while back. More on that here and here. The original story is below. It remains to be seen how fresh and new the actual content of American Horror Story Season 6 will be, but everyone involved can be commended for the new approach they're using to usher audiences into the new theme and setting. Basically, they're just letting us all out into the wild without any guiding light to lead us to the real answer. After a handful of teasers had been released, it was revealed that all but one of the miniature teasers is a fake, and the plan is for no one to know for sure which one is right until the season actually starts. So if you've watched all of the teasers, you've seen what you can expect, unless the REAL theme is from a teaser that hasn't been released yet. Everybody's gotta be difficult. Early rumors of a Slenderman season were reportedly debunked, though some of the oddball entities in these teasers could stand in for the Internet terror. Ryan Murphy has said in the past that this season will deal with children in some capacity, with operatic themes involved, and that the narrative will incorporate two different ideas he'd had festering for a future season. What those ideas are, we've yet to discover. There was that one teaser with all the blades and things hanging above a baby's crib, which was apparently housing some alien/monster. Is that what's happening here? Set photos have revealed a setting that hints at a season inspired by the Lost Colony of Roanoke, though nothing official has come out just yet. And it wouldn't be the first time. American Horror Story talked about that particular mystery from history. More on that here. Could this show actually go all the way to the premiere without anything getting spoiled, in a world where Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead would kill for some secrecy? We shall see. So far, FX's marketing goals have gone off without a hitch, though. Please try again later. For SHTF, you’re going to want at least three separate ways to your water sources. Drinking contaminated water can make you severely sick and can even kill you. Why not just carry all the water you’ll need? Not an option, water is extremely heavy so you’ll have to find it along the way. That’s why you’ll need key purification tools to filter and treat the water you find. Stainless Steel Water Bottle. Shop from the world's largest selection and best deals for Range & Shooting Slings & Swivels. Shop with confidence on eBay! Your choice of water bottle matters. It’s important to get a water bottle made out of stainless steel and not plastic. You can’t boil water in a plastic bottle or an insulated one, and boiling is the simplest way purify the water you find to ensure it’s safe to consume. So fill your stainless steel bottle today with safe, clean water and stash it in your bug out bag. That way you can start your bug out with a full bottle of clean water and then refill and boil/filter/purify as needed on your route. Water Purification Tablets. An alternative method to purify water from rivers and streams when boiling is too time- consuming is to carry some water purification tablets. These tablets treat water faster than boiling, and they allow you to purify on the go and keep moving. Plus they are extremely lightweight so that you won’t pay much of a weight penalty. Portable Water Filter. A good water filter will remove all the particulates from your water such as dirt or soot, but a great one will also remove most harmful bacterias as well. So you should pack a small portable water filter to clean your water and purify it too. The Life. Straw is my water filter of choice since it’s both small and portable. It’ll save you a lot of pack weight and space compared to larger units. Get a couple of them, one for each family member. Expedition Jerrycan Filtration System. This is not a small filter and it won’t fit inside your bug out bag. However, with your MOLLE system you can hang it on the outside of your bag. The Life. Saver Expedition Jerrycan is ideal for a family bug out since the system can supply enough clean water for a family of 4 for nearly a year. Clip it to the outside of your bug out bag empty and use it once your family arrives at your final bug- out location. Want a Downloadable and Printable Version Of This Bug Out Bag Checklist? For can get heavy so you’ll want to focus on light, easy to prepare foods. But you should also try to take advantage of what the land can provide. So make sure to pack a few survival tools to help hunt or gather additional foods along your bug out route. Calorie Dense Food Bars. Honestly, any calorie dense energy bars will do the trick. Just read the label and look for ones that provide the most calories per bar. These ER Emergency Food Ration Bars pack 2. These food bars will provide your primary energy needs on your journey since they are easy to consume on the go, and you can pack quite a lot of them without adding much weight. Plus they have a decently long shelf life (5+ years). Freeze Dried Meals. Freeze dried foods are a hot meal in a pouch. Making them another a light food source you can add to your bug out bag. They take a few minutes to prepare so wait until you find a safe spot to rest. Just add the pouch contents to boiling water, stir, and eat up. One of my personal favorites is Mountain House Beef Stroganoff. Military Meals (MRE – Meal, Ready to Eat)If MRE’s are good enough for soldiers, then they are good enough for me. There is some debate about MRE’s for survival. Here’s an excellent discussion on this hotly debated topic if you want to dig deeper. Eating Utensils. Unless you prefer eating with dirty hands, you’ll want something small and light to move your food from pouch to mouth. Get this awesome titanium spork; it’s both a spoon and a fork. And a 2 for 1 is always a good deal in survival. Plus, it’s made from light but strong titanium, so it weighs only 2. Now as a side note, you won’t need a small knife because you can use your survival knife instead (a separate list item later). Small Collapsible Bowl. You’ll want an easy way to keep your prepared food contained for serving and eating. In our homes we use plates, but they are heavy and take up a lot of space. So instead get one of these collapsible bowls, they are ingenious, and they work great. Braided Fishing Line. Fish are an excellent source of protein if you can snag them. Fishing while bugging out is not always possible, however you definitely won’t catch any without some fishing line. Get braided fishing line since its highly durable and can take more abuse than the regular fishing line. You won’t need much so you can get the small spool, but you’ll have to decide what lbs test line will work best for your needs. The bottom line is that having some fishing line is a great survival tool to have in your bag. It’s light, durable and can help you catch fish or help with other survival needs. Fishing Pole (small, collapsing, or pocket)Recently some ingenious ultra- small fishing poles have been invented. Any of these options will work great, and they break down and easily fit into your bug out bag. Make certain to take them with you on your next fishing trip so you can get experience using it. Yo- Yo Fishing Reels. I recently stumbled on these ingenious little devices. You can set several of these out, leave them, and then come back to check on them later. So you won’t have to waste precious time actively fishing. You’ll have better things to do mid bug out than casting and reeling for hours with no guarantee of success. Better to set your fishing yo- yo’s up and come back later. If you catch a fish or 2, you’re ahead of the game, but if you don’t, you didn’t waste a ton of time. Hook, Swivel, Sinker Set. We’ve already covered fishing line and poles but without hooks, swivels, and sinkers you’re going to have a hard time catching anything. Keep it light, since you only need a small number of each. This little case includes 7. Portable Light Weight Stove. This piece of survival gear is a personal choice of whether to include it in your bug out bag or not. You CAN definitely survive without it and save the weight. Your call. With that said, you can use it to boil water faster than having to build a fire. It also makes your freeze dried pouch food preparation both easier and faster. Another consideration is stealth. A fire can give away your position to others, especially at night. However, with this small stove, you’ll be able to cook your food without nearly as much exposure. Stove Fuel. If you decide to pack a stove, then you’ll need to purchase a couple of fuel containers to go with it. Grab a couple and try to use them as sparingly as possible. Eventually, they will run out, but if they get you to your bug out location before they do, then you win. Snare Wires. Setting up snares overnight might bag you a couple of squirrels or rabbits on the go. Snare wires are a lighter option than traps, so they are the right choice for your bug out bag. Be forewarned, though, they won’t be of much use unless you know what you’re doing. However, if you do learn the art of snaring, then they can be incredibly useful when bugging out. Survival Slingshot. You can learn how to use a slingshot quickly with some dedicated practice. Like most survival skills, it will take some practice, but this lightweight hunting slingshot is a decent option for sourcing some protein. Daily Multivitamin Supplement. Stash some daily vitamins to help maintain your overall heath. Your diet will become severely limited in the wilderness, so taking a daily vitamin supplement will help keep your mind and body strong. Want a Downloadable and Printable Version Of This Bug Out Bag Checklist? Click Here To Get Your FREE Copy Of It. Clothing and Warmth Items. Rule #1 – Only carry as much clothing as you need for survival. Rule #2 – Don’t forget rule number 1. Spare clothes will take too much precious pack space and weigh more than you think. So try to limited additional clothes to just a couple of the main undergarments. Plan on wearing the same set of durable clothes every day and then just change out your undergarments to maintain reasonable hygiene. Multifunctional 1. |
